A magical woodland treehouse; a timber pier that has revived the beating heart of a community; a centre providing comfort to cancer sufferers; a stunning Hex cabinet and a timber food drain: these embody the eclectic mix of outstanding timber structures, furniture and product designs to reach the shortlist of the prestigious Wood Awards 2017.

TRADA is proud to sponsor this competition, which promotes outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in the world’s most versatile, natural and sustainable material.

Twenty outstanding structures and fourteen furniture and product projects have been nominated for this year’s Awards. The judges reviewed applications in a variety of categories including: Commercial & Leisure, Education & Public Sector, Interiors, Private and Small Projects. Four bespoke and production as well as six student designs have also been selected by the judges for the Furniture and Product category, led by Max Fraser, design curator and author.

Michael Morrison of Purcell, the architect and design consultancy chairing the panel of judges for the 2017 Wood Awards, says: “Entries for the Wood Awards have increased in number and scope over the past few years. There have been many developments in the industry, in the materials available and the computer-controlled machinery that enables complex shapes to be cut. There is also the growing recognition of the environmentally sustainable credentials of timber.

“This year’s shortlisted projects used a range of timbers, from European oak to West African iroko. A larch-clad house that sits in a wood and a woodsman’s treehouse in West Dorset made with cedar and sweet chestnut also feature.”

Winners will be announced at the annual Wood Awards ceremony at Carpenters’ Hall on 21st November by ceremony host Johanna Agerman Ross, Founder of Disegno magazine and Curator of Twentieth Century and Contemporary Furniture and Product Design at the V&A.

Why not join the TRADA team at the London Design Fair (Stand BO5, Hall T2) at the Old Truman Brewery on 21st to 24th August?
