Timber, in many respects, is the ideal construction material. It is strong in both tension and compression, it has a high strength to weight ratio and can be relatively easily worked. If appropriately sourced, timber can be considered truly sustainable. Primarily, however, man has used timber as a building material because it tends to be readily available in most habitable regions of the world.
