Wood use in pulp: the UK mass balance and efficiency in use

This report forms part of the Biffaward Programme on Sustainable Resource Use. There has been strong growth in recent years in the use recycled fibres with recovered paper growing from 55% to 66% in the ten years between 1992 and 2002. The UK remains limited in the pulping technologies used. These are restricted to mechanical pulping which accounts for an estimated 450,000 tonnes and semi-chemical pulping which is responsible for 100,000 tonnes of pulp annually
