A modified wood made from underused native trees and a research project to examine rotational stiffness in the connections between CLT panels scooped top honours in last year’s TTJ Timber Innovation Award.
Competition for the award in 2016 was fierce and the judges were impressed with the high standard of entries, singling out the achievements of winners Vastern Timber with its Brimstone thermally modified British timber range, and Ewan Macpherson - from Cambridge University’s engineering department - who scooped the top prize for his research into folded plate CLT roof structures.
Now entries are being sought for this year’s TTJ Timber Innovation Award as part of the annual TTJ Awards. TRADA and Timber Expo are joint sponsors of the award which, for 2017, is again split into two categories:
- Innovative Product Development, where some aspect of the whole or part of a product needs to demonstrate that it is innovative in its sector.
- Innovative University Timber Research, a category in which some aspect of a research project needs to demonstrate that it is innovative and will have a measurable impact upon the timber sector. This latter category is open to third-year undergraduate or postgraduate (Masters or PhD) students.
The Prize
The winners of both categories of the Timber Innovation Award will benefit from an array of marketing benefits and the kudos of being the winner of an award that really pushes the boundaries in timber development. In the Innovative University Timber Research category only, industry sponsors have given on top of the main prize an extra £400 for the research winner and £200 for the research runner up as well as free TRADA membership for a year.
Winners of both categories will be unveiled at the prestigious TTJ Awards dinner, attended by all the major players in the industry.

Terms and Conditions
Companies / organisations / individuals may enter the Innovative Product Development award category providing:
- They either manufacture, distribute or own the property rights to the product / system;
- The product is fully or partially made using timber materials or assists with timber-based building materials (e.g. paints, coatings, adhesives, fixings etc);
- The product / system meets the appropriate UK building regulation, and health and safety standards; and
- The product must have been launched on to the market at the time of making this application.
Individuals may enter the Innovative University Timber Research award category providing:
- The university or individual owns the intellectual property rights to the research / theories / products or systems described in the research project;
- The research has been carried out as either third-year undergraduate or postgraduate (Masters or PhD) work; and
- The research is complete and findings have been peer reviewed, or the research will be complete and will have been peer reviewed by 30th June 2017. The work can have been undertaken in previous academic years providing it hasn’t been previously submitted.
Timescale
Entries to be received no later than 30th June 2017.
Shortlisting to be complete by 4th July 2017 for the University Timber Research category and 11th July 2017 for the Product Development category.
Shortlisted entrants to present their application to a panel at:
- High Wycombe on 22nd August 2017 for the Innovative Product Development category.
- London on 11th July 2017, 1.30pm - 5.00pm, for the Innovative University Research category.
The winners will be announced at the prestigious TTJ Awards dinner, held this year at the Brewery (Barbican) on 29th September 2017.
